WhatsApp calls not working? Common causes and fixes
Messages work, but WhatsApp calls do not connect, ring and drop, or have no sound? It is a common problem with well-known causes.
Common causes
- Network limits on calls: some networks restrict internet calling (VoIP) or some of its ports, so messages work while calls fail.
- Weak or unstable internet: calls need a steadier connection than messages.
- Data saver inside WhatsApp or Android.
- An old app or missing permissions (microphone, camera, notifications).
- Firewalls or public networks (hotel, office, school).
Try this in order
- Update WhatsApp and restart the phone.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and test the call on each.
- Turn off “Use less data for calls” in WhatsApp → Storage and data.
- Check the microphone and camera permissions in the app settings.
- Force-stop WhatsApp and open it again.
If it still fails
If messages work but calls fail on more than one network, the cause is usually a limit on the call path. An encrypted tunnel for WhatsApp only, such as Whats Call, can help: it routes only WhatsApp traffic through an encrypted server, so the rest of your phone is untouched. Make sure using it is allowed under the rules where you live.
WhatsApp’s own Help Center also describes the VPN option for people whose network does not let WhatsApp connect, and reminds you to know your local laws: the article in the WhatsApp Help Center.
